Calgary Family Portrait: Julie, Bryan & Bruce

No matter how good of a photographer you already are, it can still get hard to shake off that tense feeling you get before finally meeting your clients. Especially when they’re already made-up and ready for the photo session. Case in point is our client Julie, whom we met sometime in April.

Julie is an accomplished woman in the corporate world, and she’s now moving towards opening her own day care business in September. She’s a mom to Bruce, a charming young fella, and an affectionate wife to Bryan. At first glance, you’d take her for the intimidating type—until she starts to converse, and gets you laughing and talking some more and overall makes you feel comfortable in her company. True enough, first impressions don’t make a good basis for a person’s character.

Before starting the photo session with Julie and her family, our team scouted the best spots to take the photographs. (Yep, the LCR Photography team usually arrives on location 30-45 minutes earlier for the necessary prepping.) We did some test shots among ourselves; we tested the lights, the corners and windows, tested some poses apt for the location, and tested some camera settings that’s bound to flatter the subject. But even with all this preparedness—gear, test shots, more preps—we realize the tenseness doesn’t go away until we finally do the work.

First, we did a corporate headshot for Julie. Leslie, LCR’s main photographer, gets this done in a breeze. Snap, snap, snap, and it’s done!

Then, the family portrait. It is my personal favourite, especially when there are kids involved. I love working with kids, and as I always say, “In photography, you can never go wrong with kids.” They are naturally adorable, making their every expression and gesture worth the capture!

At the end of the day, all the tenseness and over-preparedness are all worth it, because we then realize that every photograph fuels our passion in seizing the important moments of people’s lives.
